Our Mission

Our Manifesto

We believe that every Canadian has a right to understand their government.

A. THE PROBLEM

A fast carrier pigeon

The economics of traditional news have changed with the maturation of the internet. Media organizations no longer compete on the speed and distribution of the news, today they most commonly compete on opinion and commentary.

We believe that this has contributed to the polarization of our political landscape. Reporting on the theatre of politics, rather than the policy, which continues to remain abstract.

The result is an information gap: citizens are expected to form opinions about laws and governments without clear, comprehensible access to what is actually being proposed, debated, and decided.

B. WHAT WE’RE BUILDING

Open Politics

The work towards our mission has created the largest standardized political dataset in Canada.

We're using large language models to turn thousands of pieces of legislation into something that everyone can understand, without a law degree.

C. WHO BUILDS THIS

Informed participation

The Civics Project is designed, built, and owned by Canadians.
