Marlyse Dumel named East Region senior judge for Ontario Court of Justice

What happened

• Justice Marlyse Dumel has been appointed regional senior justice for the Ontario Court of Justice, East Region, effective September 25, 2026.

Who she is

• Appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in March 2017 and presides in Ottawa in English and French.
• Served as local administrative judge from 2022 to 2026.
• Called to the bar in 2002 and spent 13 years with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, prosecuting criminal matters and providing legal advice and training.
• Has served in roles including East Region representative for the Association of Ontario Judges, member of the Justices of the Peace Review Council, member of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee, and co-chair of Ottawa’s Futures in Justice since 2023.

What the role means

• A regional senior judge exercises the powers and duties of the chief justice in their region, subject to the chief justice’s authority. Key duties called out in the release include scheduling court hearings and assigning cases to judges.
