Charity Registrations Revoked and CRTC Postings

Summary#

The Canada Revenue Agency published notices in the Canada Gazette (Part I) on November 26, 2022 saying it intends to revoke the registration of one charity for failing to meet parts of the Income Tax Act, and that several other charities asked to have their registrations revoked after merging or consolidating. What it does#

• The Canada Revenue Agency announced a proposed revocation of the registration of SIERRA LEONE CANADIAN CHILDREN’S AID SOCIETY (Toronto) for not meeting requirements of the Income Tax Act. The notice says the revocation is effective on the date the notice was published.
• The Canada Revenue Agency also published notices that the following charities asked to have their registrations revoked because they consolidated or merged with other groups:
  • BECKWITH BAPTIST CHURCH (Carleton Place, Ont.)
  • BONNIE GLEN, ALBERTA, CONGREGATION OF JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES (County of Wetaskiwin, Alta.)
  • CONNECT YOUTH INC. (Prescott, Ont.)
  • THORNCLIFFE CONGREGATION OF JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES (Edmonton, Alta.)
• The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission posted a short list of recent Part 1 applications and decisions on its website, including:
  • Applications from Markham York Incorporated (CFMS-FM, Markham) and Aboriginal Multi-Media Society of Alberta (CJWE-FM, Calgary). Deadlines for public comments are December 19, 2022 and December 14, 2022 respectively.
  • Administrative decisions listing applicants such as Northern Native Broadcasting (Terrace, B.C.) and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for changes affecting specific transmitters.

Who's affected#

• Donors, members, and anyone receiving services from SIERRA LEONE CANADIAN CHILDREN’S AID SOCIETY may be affected if its registered charity status is revoked.
• People connected to the four organizations that requested revocation because they merged (listed above) should expect administrative changes as their operations are folded into other entities.
