Summary#

On June 17, 2023, the Canada Revenue Agency published notices in the Canada Gazette saying it intends to revoke the registration of a long list of charities under the Income Tax Act. Some charities asked for their registration to be revoked. Others are listed because they did not meet filing requirements. The revocations are effective on the date of publication (June 17, 2023).

What it does#

  • Lists many named charities across Canada whose charitable registration is being revoked.
  • Splits those revocations into two groups:
    • charities that requested revocation, and
    • charities that are being proposed for revocation because they missed filing requirements.
  • States that the revocation of registration is effective on the date the notice appeared in the Canada Gazette (June 17, 2023).

Who's affected#

  • The charities named in the Gazette notices. (The Canada Gazette entry includes full names and business numbers of each organization.)
  • People who give money to, receive services from, or are otherwise connected to those organizations — for example, donors, program clients, volunteers, and boards.
  • Accountants or legal advisors who handle tax or reporting matters for the listed charities.

Why it matters#

  • Losing registered status means an organization is no longer listed as a registered charity under the Income Tax Act as of publication. That can affect whether the group can issue official donation receipts and its tax treatment.
  • Donors who relied on tax receipts from these organizations may need to check their records and get advice if they plan to claim donations.
  • For the public, this is part of how the government keeps the registered-charity list up to date — by accepting voluntary closures and removing charities that do not meet filing rules.
