Chicken quota limits for May–July 2020

Summary#

These final regulations (SOR/2020-104) update the production and marketing limits for chicken in Canada for the quota period A-163. They replace the schedule in the Canadian Chicken Marketing Quota Regulations and set province-by-province limits for the period May 10, 2020 to July 4, 2020. The changes were made by Chicken Farmers of Canada.

What it does#

• Replaces the schedule to the Canadian Chicken Marketing Quota Regulations with new provincial limits for production and marketing of chicken for period A-163 (May 10, 2020 to July 4, 2020).
• Sets three types of limits (all in live weight, kilograms) for each province:
  • Production subject to federal and provincial quotas.
  • Production subject to federal and provincial market development quotas.
  • Production subject to federal and provincial specialty chicken quotas.

Who's affected#

• Chicken producers across the provinces — these limits determine how much they can market under quota programs.
• Provincial marketing boards and Chicken Farmers of Canada, which manage and allocate quotas.
• Processors, distributors and retailers, because quotas influence the volume they receive.
• Consumers indirectly, since supply limits can affect availability and, over time, prices.
