Summary

Summary#

These are final rules that update the province-by-province turkey marketing limits under the Canadian Turkey Marketing Quota Regulations, 1990. The amended schedule sets how many pounds of turkey can be allotted in each province for the control period April 26, 2020 to April 24, 2021 and came into force when registered on February 25, 2021.

What it does#

  • Replaces the schedule in the Canadian Turkey Marketing Quota Regulations, 1990 with new province-level allotments for one control period.
  • Sets the number of pounds of turkey for each province during the control period April 26, 2020 to April 24, 2021:
    • Ontario — 170,669,376 pounds
    • Quebec — 70,765,673 pounds
    • Nova Scotia — 8,232,657 pounds
    • New Brunswick — 7,264,333 pounds
    • Manitoba — 29,310,057 pounds
    • British Columbia — 40,099,838 pounds
    • Saskatchewan — 11,003,805 pounds
    • Alberta — 29,711,440 pounds
  • Total provincial allotment for the control period is 367,057,179 pounds.
  • The amendment updates the limits used when deciding a producer’s market allotment or when issuing new allotments within a province for that control period.

Who's affected#

  • Turkey producers who participate in the quota/market-allotment system in the listed provinces.
  • Processors, retailers, and wholesalers who rely on provincial allotments and producer supply.
  • Provincial marketing bodies and anyone who applies for a new market allotment during the control period.
  • It is unclear from the notice whether any other groups are affected beyond these market participants.

Why it matters#

  • These numbers determine how much turkey can be marketed in each province for the specified year.
  • That can affect how much individual producers are allowed to sell, which in turn can influence supply available to processors and retailers.
  • For consumers, the change could have a small effect on local availability or price if allotments constrain supply.
  • This is a routine quota adjustment for a specific control period rather than a new, ongoing program.
