Regulations Amending the Canadian Chicken Marketing Quota Regulations: SOR/2023-168

Final regulations replace the schedule in the Canadian Chicken Marketing Quota Regulations to set provincial chicken production, market development, and specialty quota limits for Period A-185. The quotas apply from September 24, 2023 to November 18, 2023 and affect producers, quota administrators, processors and distributors by determining legal amounts of chicken that may be produced and marketed during that period.

Summary

Summary#

These final regulations update the chicken production and marketing limits for Period A-185. The changes, made by Chicken Farmers of Canada under the Regulations Amending the Canadian Chicken Marketing Quota Regulations, take effect on September 24, 2023 and cover the period beginning September 24, 2023 and ending November 18, 2023.

What it does#

  • Replaces the schedule in the Canadian Chicken Marketing Quota Regulations with new provincial limits for Period A-185.
  • Sets three kinds of production limits for each province (all weights in kilograms):
    • Production subject to federal and provincial quotas.
    • Production subject to federal and provincial market development quotas.
    • Production subject to federal and provincial specialty chicken quotas.
  • Provincial limits (kg) for the period:
    • Ontario — 100,410,166 kg; market development 2,300,000 kg; specialty 905,385 kg
    • Quebec — 76,316,733 kg; market development 2,167,581 kg; specialty 0 kg
    • Nova Scotia — 9,772,521 kg; market development 0 kg; specialty 0 kg
    • New Brunswick — 7,792,488 kg; market development 0 kg; specialty 0 kg
    • Manitoba — 11,221,471 kg; market development 335,000 kg; specialty 0 kg
    • British Columbia — 39,903,620 kg; market development 1,804,000 kg; specialty 1,389,106 kg
    • Prince Edward Island — 1,055,901 kg; market development 0 kg; specialty 0 kg
    • Saskatchewan — 9,657,246 kg; market development 750,000 kg; specialty 0 kg
    • Alberta — 29,230,535 kg; market development 100,000 kg; specialty 0 kg
    • Newfoundland and Labrador — 3,815,147 kg; market development 0 kg; specialty 0 kg
    • Total production quotas: 289,175,828 kg; total market development: 7,456,581 kg; total specialty: 2,294,491 kg.

Who's affected#

  • Chicken Farmers of Canada, which set the schedule.
  • Chicken producers in each province listed.
  • Provincial marketing agencies and quota administrators who manage allocations.
  • Buyers, processors, and distributors may notice changes because these limits affect the amount of chicken legally available to market during the period.

Why it matters#

  • These numbers determine how much chicken can be produced and sold under the national and provincial quota system for the nine-week period.
  • The limits affect farm planning and production decisions for that period.
  • They can influence supply available to processors, retailers, and ultimately consumers during late September to mid-November 2023.
