Summary
Summary#
This order (Registration SI/2020-8, published January 8, 2020) updates who qualifies for the Operational Service Medal with the SUDAN ribbon. It replaces an earlier order, sets the qualifying time periods and minimum days of service, describes the ribbon’s design, and says where the medal is worn relative to others.
What it does#
- Repeals Order in Council P.C. 2010-1096.
- Declares that service counted for the Operational Service Medal with the SUDAN ribbon is:
- service performed in Sudan, or
- service performed outside Canada in direct support of operations conducted in Sudan.
- Sets minimum time-in-service rules:
- 30 cumulative days during the period beginning September 15, 2004 and ending July 29, 2016;
- 21 cumulative days beginning July 30, 2016; or
- a combination of days from the two periods that together total at least 21 cumulative days.
- Specifies the ribbon design as 32 mm wide with a 22-mm dark green central stripe, flanked by 2.5-mm white stripes and 2.5-mm red stripes.
- States that the Operational Service Medal with the SUDAN ribbon is to be worn after the Operational Service Medal with the HAITI ribbon.
Who's affected#
- People who served in Sudan or who served outside Canada in direct support of operations in Sudan during the dates above.
- This can include military personnel and others who meet the rules in the Operational Service Medal Regulations. The order itself does not list specific job titles or groups.
- Veterans, current members of the forces, and families may be affected when medals are awarded or when records are reviewed for eligibility.
Why it matters#
- It clarifies who is eligible for this campaign medal and under which time frames and minimum service lengths.
- The change affects whether past service qualifies someone for recognition with this medal.
- The ribbon design and placement rule affect how recipients wear their medals on uniform or at formal events.
