Summary

Summary#

These are final regulations that change the Canadian Hatching Egg Producers Quota Regulations. They set the final provincial limits for broiler hatching eggs for the 2024 calendar year and updated limits for 2025. The regulations were registered on September 24, 2024; most of the rules took effect then, while the 2025 limits take effect January 1, 2025.

What it does#

  • Replaces the schedules in the Canadian Hatching Egg Producers Quota Regulations to set specific provincial limits for broiler hatching eggs for two periods:
    • Limits effective for the period beginning January 1, 2024 and ending December 31, 2024.
    • Limits effective for the period beginning January 1, 2025 and ending December 31, 2025 (this 2025 schedule comes into force on January 1, 2025).
  • Lists the allowed number of broiler hatching eggs (for interprovincial and intraprovincial trade) for each signatory province. For both years, the export column is 0 for every province.

2024 provincial limits (Interprovincial / intraprovincial trade)

  • Ontario: 281,256,544
  • Quebec: 225,633,674
  • Manitoba: 37,374,993
  • British Columbia: 126,295,019
  • Saskatchewan: 31,563,526
  • Alberta: 94,256,470
  • Export trade for all provinces: 0

2025 provincial limits (Interprovincial / intraprovincial trade)

  • Ontario: 289,621,473
  • Quebec: 232,318,579
  • Manitoba: 38,486,714
  • British Columbia: 130,051,670
  • Saskatchewan: 32,502,385
  • Alberta: 97,059,710
  • Export trade for all provinces: 0

Who's affected#

  • Canadian Hatching Egg Producers (the agency managing the quota system).
  • Hatching-egg producers and hatcheries in:
    • Ontario
    • Quebec
    • Manitoba
    • British Columbia
    • Saskatchewan
    • Alberta
  • Poultry producers and hatchery customers who plan production and chick supply.
  • Provincial marketing agencies and anyone who tracks or administers interprovincial egg movement.

If you are outside those six provinces, the regulations do not list limits for other provinces; it’s unclear from this item whether other provinces are covered or affected.

Why it matters#

  • These numbers set firm production and movement limits for broiler hatching eggs in the listed provinces. That determines how many eggs can be legally moved within and between those provinces under the quota system.
  • Hatcheries and producers use these limits for production planning and to match supply with broiler chick demand.
  • The fact that the export column is 0 for all provinces means, under these quotas, no eggs are allocated for export in the schedules shown—this could affect businesses that export hatching eggs if they were expecting export allocations.
