Canada Gazette, Part I, Volume 160, Number 26: MISCELLANEOUS NOTICES
GUARANTEED FUNERAL DEPOSITS OF CANADA (FRATERNAL)
Summary
Guaranteed Funeral Deposits of Canada (Fraternal) has announced it plans to apply to create a trust company called “GFD Trust” (French: “Fiducie GFD”) based in Oakville, Ontario. The trust would offer services for the funeral/bereavement sector; the public can object to the application until August 4, 2026. Publication of the notice does not mean the trust will be approved.
What it does
This is a public notice that GFD intends to apply for letters patent to incorporate a trust company under the Trust and Loan Companies Act. The proposed company would provide trust products and services aimed at the Canadian bereavement and funeral market. The final decision still depends on a regulatory review and the Minister of Finance.
Who it affects
People who prepay funerals or hold funeral deposits, funeral homes and other bereavement service providers, fraternal organizations involved in funeral services, residents or businesses in Oakville (where the head office would be), and financial regulators. Anyone who objects can submit written objections to OSFI by the deadline.
Why it matters
If approved, the new trust could become a place where prepaid funeral funds are held and managed. That could change how funeral deposits are handled, who manages those funds, and potentially affect consumer protection and choices for people planning or prepaying funerals. Because this is only an application notice, it does not yet change any rules or protections.
