Meritorious Service Decorations (Civil) 2022

Summary#

On January 29, 2022, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary May Simon announced civilian honours in the Canada Gazette. The announcement lists recipients of the Meritorious Service Cross (Civil Division) and the Meritorious Service Medal (Civil Division).

What it does#

• On the recommendation of the Civil Advisory Committee, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary May Simon awarded the Meritorious Service Cross (Civil Division) to Wanda Bedard, Sophia Grinvalds, Paul Grinvalds, Peter Warrack, and Phyllis M. C. Webstad.
• She also awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (Civil Division) to 61 people. Several of those medals were awarded posthumously (the list in the Gazette marks some recipients as “(deceased)”).

Who's affected#

• The main people affected are the named recipients and their families.
• Their communities, workplaces, and organizations may also take notice because these are public honours.
• The wider Canadian public might notice if they follow national honours lists or if a recipient is a public figure.

Why it matters#

• These awards publicly recognize and honor notable civilian service to Canada.
• For recipients, the honours acknowledge contributions and can raise awareness of the causes or work they represent.
• For the public, the list highlights people whose actions the government has chosen to recognize; the announcement itself is a routine honours publication with no legal or financial change.
