Assign postal code to Tobin Lake

Petitioners ask Canada Post to assign a unique postal code to the Resort Village of Tobin Lake for accurate address verification and emergency response. The government responds that Canada Post assigns postal codes only where it provides direct delivery; Tobin Lake lacks that service, so residents use PO Boxes or general delivery.

Why we would sign this petition

  • A unique postal code would help emergency services locate addresses more reliably, reducing response confusion.
  • A dedicated code could cut mail and parcel delivery errors and simplify address verification for businesses and residents.
  • Official postal recognition would reflect community growth and give Tobin Lake a clearer civic identity for services.

Why we wouldn’t sign this petition

  • Canada Post’s practice limits postal codes to addresses with direct delivery; changing that policy or extending delivery may be operationally complex and costly.
  • Residents already have alternatives—PO Boxes, general delivery or Flex Delivery—that provide functional mailing addresses and postal codes.
  • Assigning a postal code without extending direct delivery may not fix third‑party verification issues; a civic addressing initiative or delivery extension might be more effective.

The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.

Official petition

Petition to the Government of Canada WHEREAS the Resort Village of Tobin Lake, located in Saskatchewan, does not have a unique postal code. AND WHEREAS this has resulted in frequent mail and parcel delivery issues, confusion in emergency response services, complications with alarm monitoring and home security systems, difficulties in business operations and address verification; AND WHEREAS the continued growth of our community, including permanent and seasonal residents, supports the need for more accurate and efficient address verification; We, the undersigned citizens and residents of Canada, business owners, and community members of the Resort Village of Tobin Lake, request that Government of Canada and Canada Post corporation assign a dedicated and unique postal code to the Resort Village of Tobin Lake to ensure reliable address verification, emergency service accuracy, and recognition of our community's distinct identity.

Government response

Response by the Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement and Québec Lieutenant Signed by The Honourable Jenna Sudds The Canada Post Corporation maintains a nation-wide postal code system for the sole purpose of processing and delivering millions of pieces of mail each day as efficiently as possible. Postal codes are assigned exclusively to addresses that qualify for a prime mode of delivery, such as door-to-door delivery, community mailboxes, Post Office Boxes, or general delivery. In areas where the Canada Post Corporation does not provide direct delivery service, postal codes are not assigned to civic addresses. Tobin Lake currently falls outside Canada Post Corporation’s direct delivery network. As such, residents are served through alternate delivery methods, primarily via Post Office Boxes or general delivery at the local post office. These services provide residents with a functional mailing address and postal code for the purposes of mail receipt and parcel delivery. Customers who are not eligible for a Post Office Box still qualify for Canada Post Corporation's General Delivery service at the local post office. They may also rent a convenience Post Office Box, which would give them a mailing address and a postal code. All members of the community are also welcome to take advantage of Canada Post Corporation's Flex Delivery service, which provides a mailing address and postal code, to manage their online orders should they choose. While no civic addressing initiative is currently planned for the Tobin Lake region, the Canada Post Corporation continues to monitor community growth and infrastructure development across Canada. Should delivery service be extended to these communities in the future, postal codes would be assigned accordingly. In the interim, residents are encouraged to use both their Post Office Box mailing address and civic address when contracting services or placing online orders. This approach, while not guaranteed to resolve all third-party verification issues, can help mitigate service disruptions. The Canada Post Corporation remains committed to providing accessible and reliable postal services to all Canadians and appreciates the feedback provided through this petition.
