Protect Salmon Enhancement Program funding

Petitioners ask the Government of Canada to reconsider the proposed $544 million cuts to Fisheries and Oceans Canada and ensure no cuts are made to the Salmon Enhancement Program (SEP). The government responds that Fisheries and Oceans Canada is reviewing budgets and operations to minimize impacts and will share further decisions in due course.

Why we would sign this petition

  • SEP funds local Streamkeepers and provides DFO community advisors and technical support essential to volunteers’ ability to protect habitat and assess stocks.
  • The petition seeks funding certainty beyond March 31, 2026, allowing groups to plan projects and training without the risk of abrupt funding loss.
  • Preventing the proposed cuts would maintain community capacity for stewardship and ongoing salmon enhancement work in British Columbia.

Why we wouldn’t sign this petition

  • Reversing or blocking $544 million in proposed cuts would increase budgetary pressure and could conflict with broader government efficiency and spending priorities.
  • Budget allocations are complex and subject to trade-offs; protecting one program fully may be impractical without affecting other services.
  • The government’s departmental review may identify targeted adjustments that preserve priority SEP functions while achieving needed efficiencies, offering an alternative to a full exemption.

The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.

Official petition

Petition to the Government of Canada WHEREAS • Streamkeepers throughout the province of British Columbia are committed volunteers that deserve certainty for funding support from the Salmon Enhancement Program (SEP) beyond the current budget end of March 31 2026. • The Salmon Enhancement Program (SEP) collaborates with the Pacific Streamkeepers Federation in training that ensures that community volunteers are able protect and improve aquatic health, habitat status, land use and stock assessment with their communities. The SEP provides for DFO Community Advisors and DFO technical support personnel and is absolutely critical for the functioning of Streamkeepers groups. THEREFORE We, the undersigned citizens and permanent residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to reconsider the proposed $544 Million cuts to DFO in the recently passed budget and urge the House of Commons to ensure that no cuts are made to the Salmon Enhancement Program (SEP).
