Official petition

Petition to the Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement Whereas: Canada Post is a vital national infrastructure, enabling Canadians to stay connected and communities and businesses to thrive; Canada Post's core mandate is to serve every address in every community, regardless of cost; Recent decisions, like ending the moratorium on community mailbox conversions, put that mandate at risk, with government prioritizing financial considerations over public service; Ending the moratorium will be particularly harmful for the most vulnerable in our communities, including seniors, those living with a disability, and those living alone, who ought not have to risk their health and safety to collect their mail; There remain significant gaps in Canada Post's Delivery Accommodation Program; Community mailboxes remain a target for mail theft, putting Canadians at undue risk of identity theft and other forms of fraud; Community mailbox installations will likely impose significant financial burdens on municipal governments, detract from the aesthetics of urban environments, and result in additional traffic, noise and litter problems at installation sites; Community mailbox installations will require a significant capital investment from Canada Post, an investment that would be better directed toward enhancing, rather than diminishing, service quality; Community mailboxes will eliminate thousands of good, unionized jobs. We, the undersigned residents of the Province of British Columbia call upon the Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement to: 1. Reinstate the moratorium on community mailbox conversions; and 2. Instruct Canada Post to maintain home delivery to all addresses that currently receive it.
