Protect postal services
AI summary
Petitioners say Canada Post and the governing Liberals are planning service cuts that would eliminate jobs, end door‑to‑door delivery, lower delivery standards, and lift the moratorium on rural post office closures, and that Canada Post submitted a plan to government that has not been made public. They contend these measures would disproportionately affect seniors and disabled Canadians (which the petitioners say represent over 40% of the population), rural, remote and Indigenous communities, and that up to four million households and thousands of workers could lose services or jobs; they also allege the government relied on an Industrial Inquiry Commission report developed with limited public input. The petition asks the Government to stop the cuts and to launch a fully transparent public mandate review of Canada Post allowing meaningful stakeholder input; no government response is included in the petition record.

Official petition
Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament Assembled Whereas Canada Post and the governing Liberals are taking an axe to long-treasured postal services - eliminating good jobs, eliminating door-to-door delivery, lowering mail delivery standards, and removing the moratorium preventing the closure of rural post offices. Whereas Canada Post has submitted its plan for these cuts to the Government, but it has not been released publicly. Whereas these cuts will hurt seniors and disabled Canadians in particular, who represent over 40% of the population, as well as rural, remote and Indigenous communities, four million households will also lose door-to- door delivery over the next three to five years, and thousands of workers will lose their jobs. Whereas the Government of Canada has instructed Canada Post to cut services based on an Industrial Inquiry Commission report produced with limited input from the public - its main stakeholder - and which rejected service expansion recommendations of those who did participate, and; Whereas Canada Post offers a public service that needs to be protected. Therefore we, the undersigned, citizens and residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to stop the postal service cuts, and to immediately launch a fully transparent public mandate review of Canada Post that allows all stakeholders to provide meaningful input.
