Renew Indigenous Housing Agreements

AI summary

The petitioners say Indigenous and affordable housing providers, including M'akola Housing Society in British Columbia, face the expiration of long-standing federal operating agreements that they say could threaten the affordability of 528 Indigenous homes in BC (about 1,775 people) and 42 homes in Port Alberni (about 147 people). They ask the Government of Canada to renew and adequately fund National Housing Strategy bilateral agreements before expiry, protect tenants from unaffordable rent increases, and work with Indigenous housing providers and provinces/territories on a long-term funding framework; the petition does not include a government response.

Official petition

PETITION TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED We, the undersigned residents of Canada, draw the attention of the House of Commons in Parliament Assembled to the following: Whereas: Indigenous and affordable housing providers, including M'akola Housing Society in British Columbia, are facing the expiration of long- standing federal operating agreements; The expiration of these agreements threatens the affordability of 528 Indigenous homes across British Columbia, affecting approximately 1,775 people, including families, Elders and persons with disabilities; In Port Alberni, 42 homes housing approximately 147 people are affected, with agreements scheduled to expire in 2028; Without continued federal support, some households could face rents that double or triple, putting residents at risk of housing insecurity and displacement; Provinces and territories have called on the federal government to renew bilateral agreements under the National Housing Strategy and provide long-term funding certainty; and Preserving existing Indigenous, social and affordable housing is essential to addressing Canada's housing crisis and advancing reconciliation. Therefore, we, the undersigned, residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to: 1. Commit to renewing and adequately funding National Housing Strategy bilateral agreements before existing agreements expire; 2. Ensure that Indigenous housing providers and their tenants are protected from unaffordable rent increases resulting from the expiration of federal operating agreements; and 3. Work with Indigenous housing providers, provinces and territories to establish a long-term funding framework that preserves existing affordable Indigenous housing and provides housing security for current and future tenants.
