Eliminate federal diesel taxes

Petitioners ask the Government of Canada to eliminate federal diesel taxes until at least Canada Day 2027, provide emergency pre‑permitting and tax relief for refining and fuel transport infrastructure, and strengthen domestic fuel supply.

Why we would sign this petition

  • Lowers operating costs for farmers, carriers and businesses by cutting diesel taxes, which could reduce transportation and grocery prices for Canadians.
  • Supports expansion of Canadian refining and fuel transport capacity to reduce reliance on imported refined fuel and vulnerability to export restrictions.
  • Emergency pre‑permitting and tax relief would speed construction of refining and transport infrastructure, improving short‑term resilience to supply disruptions.

Why we wouldn’t sign this petition

  • Removing federal diesel taxes would cut government revenue and could reduce funds available for public services or require compensating measures.
  • Pre‑permitting and tax relief could bypass normal regulatory and environmental review, raising community or safety concerns about new infrastructure.
  • Supporting expansion of fossil‑fuel refining and transport may conflict with climate policy goals and could delay investment in low‑carbon alternatives.

The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.

Official petition

PETITION TO THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA WHEREAS Diesel is essential to Canadian farmers, commercial carriers, businesses and workers, powering the equipment and transportation needed to produce and deliver food and goods across the country; Rising diesel prices increase operating costs for farmers and businesses and contribute to higher transportation, grocery and household costs for Canadians; Canada has significant domestic energy resources, yet remains vulnerable to disruptions in imported refined fuel and potential restrictions on diesel exports from the United States; Increasing Canadian refining and fuel transportation capacity would strengthen domestic energy security and help protect Canadians from future supply disruptions; THEREFORE We, the undersigned citizens and permanent residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to: Eliminate federal taxes on diesel until at least Canada Day 2027; and/or Provide emergency pre-permitting and tax relief for fuel refining and transportation infrastructure; and/or Take steps to strengthen Canada's domestic fuel supply and reduce Canada's vulnerability to future diesel shortages and supply disruptions.
