Rural crime plan and bail repeal

Petitioners ask the Government of Canada to deliver a detailed plan to address rising rural crime and to repeal soft‑on‑crime and catch‑and‑release bail policies they say have increased offending.

Why we would sign this petition

  • It would require a detailed federal plan targeting rural crime, directing attention to communities experiencing rising offending.
  • Repealing catch‑and‑release and soft‑on‑crime policies could reduce repeat offending and increase public safety by keeping higher‑risk suspects detained pre‑trial.
  • Local businesses and communities could face fewer crime‑related economic harms if these measures lower offending and improve safety.

Why we wouldn’t sign this petition

  • Removing bail and related policies risks undermining the presumption of innocence and may increase pre‑trial detention without clear legal safeguards.
  • Crime policy involves provincial policing and courts; a federal plan or statutory repeals may face jurisdictional limits and practical implementation challenges.
  • The petition links rising crime to these policies; opponents may argue the causal claim is contested and that broad repeal is unjustified without clearer evidence.

The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.
