Deploy peacekeepers to Gaza
Petitioners ask Canada to urgently deploy impartial international peacekeeping forces to Gaza to protect civilians and enable humanitarian aid. The government responds that it supports a temporary international stabilization force and will coordinate with partners.
Why we would sign this petition
- Places impartial forces between civilians and combatants, which could reduce civilian harm and protection gaps during conflict.
- Helps secure and facilitate sustained delivery of humanitarian aid cited as urgently needed by the petitioners.
- Aligns with Canada’s stated commitments to peacekeeping, international humanitarian law and the responsibility to protect vulnerable populations.
Why we wouldn’t sign this petition
- Effective deployment needs a clear international mandate, host-party consent and secure access; without these, forces may be obstructed or ineffective.
- There are safety and escalation risks if armed groups remain active; deployment without robust rules of engagement could endanger personnel and civilians.
- Some may prefer alternatives—strengthened diplomacy, ceasefires, or UN-coordinated humanitarian corridors—which might be faster or less risky than a new mission.
The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.
Official petition
Petition to the Government of Canada The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of civilian lives, including children, and has led to the destruction of essential infrastructure, access to food, medical care, and shelter; Canada has a longstanding commitment to peacekeeping, international law, and the protection of civilians in conflict zones; The ongoing conflict continues to pose grave threats to regional stability, human rights, and international peace; and Impartial international peacekeeping forces have historically played a vital role in protecting civilians and facilitating humanitarian aid in areas of armed conflict. We, the undersigned, People of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to work with international partners, including the United Nations, to urgently deploy peacekeeping forces to Gaza for the protection of civilians, to support the delivery of humanitarian aid, and to uphold Canada’s commitment to international humanitarian law and the responsibility to protect vulnerable populations.
Government response
Response by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Signed by Rob Oliphant It has long been Canada’s position that a two-state solution is the only viable path to long-term peace and security for Israelis, Palestinians, and the Middle East more broadly. That’s why on September 21, 2025 Canada recognized the State of Palestine to preserve prospects for a two-state solution. Canada welcomes the comprehensive peace plan for Gaza being advanced by the United States President Trump and thanks the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye for their tireless mediation efforts. Canada calls on the parties to continue implementing the terms of the ceasefire agreement. All hostages’ remains must be returned, the withdrawal of Israeli troops must be maintained, and immediate, rapid and unimpeded humanitarian aid must be provided to the countless people in dire need across Gaza. It is vital that the parties continue to engage constructively in negotiations and take the necessary steps to achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace agreement, as stipulated in the United States plan. We call on Israel to protect civilians and to allow sustained, unimpeded and large-scale delivery of humanitarian aid into and throughout Gaza led by international organizations. Gaza must be demilitarized, with no role for Hamas, and there can be no displacement of the Palestinian people. As stipulated in the United States plan, Canada supports the creation of a temporary International Stabilization Force to ensure Hamas’ disarmament, facilitate Israeli withdrawal, and protect civilians. Canada will also work with international partners to strengthen the Palestinian Authority’s reform and capacity-building efforts, enabling it to reassume governance responsibilities in Gaza. This conflict has resulted in intolerable suffering on both sides. We must work together to uphold our commitments to peace and continue laying the foundation for a two-state solution.
