Extend Iranian immigration deadlines

Petitioners ask the Prime Minister for an automatic 30‑day blanket extension of IRCC, IRB and Federal Court status, filing and submission deadlines for all Iranians, with relief for affected Canadian‑Iranian representatives and review.

Why we would sign this petition

  • Prevents status loss and missed deadlines for Iranians affected by the crisis by pausing time‑limited requirements, reducing the risk applicants lose immigration rights for circumstances beyond their control.
  • Lessens mental‑health and administrative burdens by avoiding numerous case‑by‑case extension requests that petitioners say cause stress, uncertainty and extra strain on officials and representatives.
  • Provides flexibility through a built‑in review commitment so extensions can be prolonged if conditions in Iran remain exceptional, supporting procedural fairness.

Why we wouldn’t sign this petition

  • A blanket national extension targets one nationality and may raise fairness concerns for other applicants and set a precedent for future crises.
  • Automatic relief may be overbroad, applying to cases unaffected by the Iran crisis; targeted, case‑by‑case accommodation could better match individual need.
  • Implementing wide extensions could create administrative backlog, verification challenges and potential legal or resource complications that impede timely adjudication.

The summary and both sets of reasons are AI-generated from the petition and given equal weight. Claims are the petitioners’ own; consult the official record for the full text.

Official petition

Petition to the Prime Minister Since 9 January 2026, Iranians have faced escalating state violence, internet blackouts, mass arbitrary arrests, and grave, ongoing human rights violations, which have disabled them from complying with time sensitive Canadian immigration requirements and deadlines set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the Immigration and Refugee Board, and the Federal Court; Iranians in Canada, including authorised immigration representatives, are experiencing profound vicarious trauma, grief, anxiety, and survivor’s guilt as they witness these events, similarly impairing their ability to meet time sensitive immigration requirements and deadlines; Requesting necessary extensions on a case by case basis imposes significant and unnecessary burden, exacerbates mental health distress due to time pressures and uncertainty, and needlessly strains administrative and judicial systems; The combined effects of the situation in Iran, for Iranians in Iran and Canada, have created exceptional circumstances that risk missed deadlines, status loss, and other serious immigration consequences that reflect the crisis rather than applicants’ merits or intentions; and Canada has consistently affirmed its commitment to human rights, procedural fairness, and natural justice requiring proactive remedies. We, the undersigned, citizens and permanent residents of Canada, call upon the Prime Minister to: 1. Implement an automatic, blanket extension of status, submission, and filing deadlines with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, and the Federal Court, for all Iranians for at least 30 days; 2. Provide corresponding deadline and compliance relief to Canadian-Iranian immigration representatives who are directly affected by the crisis; and 3. Commit to review and extend these measures, as may be required.
