Official petition

Petition to the Minister of Foreign Affairs NHL hockey player Alex Ovechkin, a Russian citizen, has long been a supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the architect of Russian aggression against Ukraine; In September 2026, a commercial for Vladimir Putin’s United Russia political party was released showing Alex Ovechkin with other Putin supporters, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, confirming Alex Ovechkin's continued support for the policies of the Russian government; and Canada has already listed both Sergei Lavrov and Vladimir Putin on the schedule of sanctioned Russians for their role in Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Minister of Foreign Affairs to: 1. Add Alex Ovechkin to Schedule 1 under the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations, as “a person who has engaged in activities that directly or indirectly facilitate, support, provide funding for or contribute to a violation or attempted violation of the sovereignty or territorial integrity of Ukraine”; 2. Ensure that Alex Ovechkin is subject to restrictions on Canadian financial transactions and ownership in accordance with the Regulations; and 3. Work with all relevant ministries and agencies to ensure that Alex Ovechkin is denied entry into Canada indefinitely, and that he will not be granted an exemption to this prohibition for any reason, including for purposes of employment or personal travel.
