Manitoba bill would cut household power bills by about $50 a year
A proposed levy on large cryptocurrency operations and AI data centres would fund monthly bill reductions for residential Hydro customers.
Summary
Manitoba’s proposed Budget Implementation and Tax Statutes Amendment Act (BITSA 2) would change Hydro bill funding and provincial financial reporting.
- Hydro bills: Revenue from a new levy on cryptocurrency operations and large AI data centres would go to residential Hydro customers. The government estimates savings of about $50 per customer per year, with monthly bill reductions beginning early in the new year.
- WCB reporting: The bill would return the Workers Compensation Board to summary government financial reporting, reversing changes made in 2018–19. The government says this would improve financial oversight while protecting the WCB’s independence.
