The municipal council has given a notice of motion and submitted a draft regulation to recognize the fire at the Laurier Palace cinema as a historical event. The fire occurred on January 9, 1927, at 1683 Sainte-Catherine Street East, in the Hochelaga neighborhood. It resulted in the death of 78 children.
The regulation has not yet been adopted. A public consultation must take place before its adoption. The details will be specified in a public notice from the clerk.
The City proposes to officially recognize the historical significance of the fire and its social and regulatory consequences. Anyone interested will be able to make representations during the public consultation, according to the terms of the upcoming notice.
This decision does not yet designate the event as historical: the municipal council will need to adopt the regulation at a later meeting.
