New Brunswick plan targets farm emissions and climate risks

The strategy sets out how the province will track farm emissions and help producers prepare for drought, severe weather and other climate impacts.

Summary

New Brunswick’s agriculture climate strategy aims to cut farm emissions and help producers prepare for climate impacts, including severe weather, drought and changing pest threats.

The strategy focuses on:

  • Tracking agricultural emissions and reporting reductions through the federal National Inventory Report.
  • Helping producers adopt practices and technologies for water and soil management, pest control and sustainable production.
  • Creating a digital hub for information about agricultural climate programs and services.

Climate-related disruptions caused an estimated $170 million in lost revenue from 2011 to 2023. The release says losses could exceed $300 million by 2050 without action. Agriculture accounts for about four per cent of New Brunswick’s greenhouse gas emissions.
