The bill would create tuition assistance and training grant programs for direct support professionals who work with people with developmental disabilities. Community colleges could develop or improve training, including a certificate program and career ladder programs that may lead to an associate’s degree or certificates. The bill is introduced and has been referred to the Higher Education Committee.
Eligible workers enrolled at least part time could receive a grant covering up to 50% of tuition at a state-operated community college. The programs would be set up through agreements involving the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities and the colleges and university systems.
The bill allows tuition assistance only within funds appropriated for that purpose. Tuition excludes mandatory fees, books, and room and board. After a worker successfully completes a program, the provider employing that worker would reimburse the college for half the cost of the training or tuition.
