Brantford General opens expanded emergency department with new mental-health rooms

What happened

• Brant Community Healthcare System opened a new, expanded emergency department at Brantford General Hospital funded in part by a $28 million provincial investment.

Key features of the new ED

• More than 7,000 square feet larger than the previous emergency department.
• New and expanded treatment rooms.
• Dedicated extended-stay area and expanded observation area.
• Additional mental-health safe rooms.
• Improved walk-in arrival area and an ambulance arrival/off-loading zone.
• New Indigenous Family Space adjacent to the emergency department.

By the numbers

• The hospital serves more than 50,000 patients a year.
• Brant Community Healthcare System operates 330 beds across two sites and serves over 150,000 residents in Brantford, County of Brant, Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.
• The province has invested about $16 million previously for upgrades at Brantford General and is investing over $15 million for planning and construction of a new BCHS hospital.
• In 2026–27 BCHS will receive $2.44 million through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund.

Why it matters

• The expansion is intended to reduce wait times, increase ED capacity and improve patient flow and mental-health care in the Brantford region.
• The project is part of a broader provincial health-infrastructure plan (about $64 billion over 10 years) to support major hospital projects and add hospital beds.
