Toronto Construction Firms Fined Over Carbon Monoxide Exposure

Two companies were fined after workers were exposed to unsafe carbon monoxide levels in a Toronto parking garage.

Summary

Two companies were fined after workers became unwell while finishing concrete in a Toronto parking garage on July 4, 2023. Emergency medical services treated multiple workers for carbon monoxide exposure, and Toronto Fire Services found elevated levels in the garage.

  • Fieldgate Construction Management Inc., the constructor, was fined $55,000.
  • Metro Concrete Works [2016] Inc., the employer, was fined $30,000.
  • The companies pleaded guilty. The court also imposed a 25% victim fine surcharge.

A ministry investigation found that the area where workers were using gasoline-powered finishing equipment was not being adequately tested for airborne carbon monoxide, as required by Ontario workplace safety regulations.
