Saskatchewan urges safer charging to prevent battery fires
During Fire Prevention Week, residents are encouraged to use approved chargers, watch for battery damage and keep smoke alarms working.
Summary
Saskatchewan’s Fire Prevention Week runs October 4 to 10, 2026. This year’s campaign focuses on reducing fire risks from lithium-ion batteries in devices such as phones, laptops, e-bikes and power tools.
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency recommends that residents:
- Use manufacturer-approved chargers and cords, and charge devices on hard, flat surfaces away from things that can burn.
- Stop using a device if its battery becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks, smells, smokes or makes unusual sounds. Unplug devices when fully charged.
- Charge larger equipment outside when possible, and keep exits clear.
Test smoke alarms monthly and make sure everyone at home knows two ways out of every room.
