Review finds SAMA effective, flags four governance improvements

An independent review says Saskatchewan’s property assessment agency is working effectively but identifies ways to improve appointments, committees, engagement and conflict rules.

Summary

An independent review found that SAMA is operating effectively and has the professional skills and management capacity to do its work. SAMA maintains Saskatchewan’s property assessment system, which supports the distribution of municipal and education property taxes.

The review identified four areas for improvement:

  • Board member appointments
  • Advisory committees
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Conflict of interest guidelines

The Government of Saskatchewan says it will continue its legislative and policy oversight while respecting SAMA’s independent governance and operations. The review results are being made public.
