Saskatchewan targets 2,600 MW of nuclear power by 2050
The province is planning for large reactors in the northwest and studying small modular reactors near Estevan to meet future electricity demand.
Summary
Saskatchewan’s plan sets a goal of at least 2,600 MW of nuclear power by 2050 as the province prepares for higher electricity demand.
- Northwest Saskatchewan: SaskPower will plan for two potential large reactors, with an initial goal of more than 2,000 MW. The first is expected online by 2042.
- Near Estevan: SaskPower selected the Rafferty site for further study of small modular reactors, with a goal of at least 600 MW.
The plan says nuclear power would add non-emitting baseload electricity to the province’s energy mix. SaskPower will assess potential locations and continue engagement with local communities and Indigenous peoples as planning advances.
