Saskatchewan backs faster zebra mussel testing
PathoScan will receive $30,000 and a 16-week residency to validate on-site tests that could return results in one to two hours.
Summary
Saskatchewan selected PathoScan to adapt its rapid diagnostic platform for detecting zebra mussels in water samples. The on-site tests could provide results in one to two hours.
- Where samples may come from: Watercraft, roadside inspection stations and other high-risk locations.
- How it works: The platform detects genetic material released by zebra mussels, including microscopic larvae that visual checks may miss.
- Project support: PathoScan will receive a $30,000 grant and take part in a 16-week residency with the Ministry of Environment to validate the technology and support possible future operational use.
The project aims to help officials make faster inspection, containment and response decisions. The release says the platform could also be adapted to detect other invasive species.
