Remove Armed Forces From Iran Hostilities

Summary#

This concurrent resolution directs the President, under section 5(c) of the War Powers Resolution, to remove United States Armed Forces from hostilities against the Islamic Republic of Iran. It allows an exception for elements of the Armed Forces that may be necessary to defend the United States or an ally or partner from imminent attack, but requires the President to follow the War Powers Resolution’s section 5(b) requirements for any such defensive use. The resolution also notes that removal is not required if there is an explicit declaration of war or a specific congressional authorization for use of military force against Iran.

What it means for you#

If agreed to by both chambers and acted on by the President, the resolution would direct the President to end U.S. military participation in hostilities with Iran, except for forces narrowly needed for immediate defense against imminent attack and subject to War Powers Resolution procedures. The resolution does not itself create new funding or describe operational details.
