AmeriCorps Access for Dreamers Act

Summary#

The AmeriCorps Access for Dreamers Act would change the National and Community Service Act of 1990 so that people granted deferred action under DACA (the program announced June 15, 2012) are eligible to receive AmeriCorps educational awards. The bill inserts DACA deferred action into 42 U.S.C. 12602(a)(3) and says this eligibility applies "without regard to" the limits in subtitle A of title IV of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (8 U.S.C. 1611 et seq.). The amendment takes effect on the date the bill becomes law and applies to educational awards disbursed on or after that date. The bill was introduced in the House on September 14, 2026, by Representatives Julie Johnson, Delia Ramirez, Eleanor Norton, Nydia Velázquez, and Jasmine Crockett, and was referred to the House Committee on Education and Workforce.

What it means for you#

  • If you have DACA (deferred action under the June 15, 2012 program), this bill would make you eligible to receive AmeriCorps educational awards for service terms covered after the law goes into effect.
  • If you run or work for AmeriCorps programs, you would treat DACA recipients as eligible for educational awards even where PRWORA limits might otherwise apply.
  • For people who are not DACA recipients, the bill does not change eligibility rules.
