Strengthening Emergency Responses Act

Summary#

The bill would require emergency action plans at diplomatic and consular posts to be reviewed at least once a year, after each emergency covered by a plan, and when changing conditions call for an update. Reviews after an emergency would include lessons learned. The bill would also require crisis intake systems and forms to be widely available and working throughout an evacuation, and regular updates to evacuees’ next-of-kin. Within 30 days, the Secretary of State would report on evacuation communications procedures and whether posts need more staff. Within 90 days, the Secretary would review instances of airlines engaging in price gouging during certain evacuations.

What it means for you#

For U.S. citizens abroad during an emergency evacuation, crisis intake systems and forms would need to remain available and operational. The bill also calls for regular contact with next-of-kin to provide current information. It does not set airline prices or specify what action would follow the review of alleged price gouging.

Expenses#

The bill does not specify expenses or provide funding amounts.
