The bill would let people diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease enroll in Medicare before age 65 if they would otherwise qualify for Medicare at age 65. Enrollees would receive Medicare Part A, B, and D benefits and protections, including the option to join a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage. The bill would also provide access to certain Medicare supplemental policies, known as Medigap.
Eligible people could enroll during a three-month period that starts in the month after diagnosis. Coverage would start the month after enrollment. People already eligible for Medicare or Medicaid would not have their existing benefits or eligibility changed by this option. The bill would require updates to Medicare information materials.
Enrollees would pay the premiums that apply to them for Medicare Part A, Part B, and Part D coverage. The bill does not specify premium amounts.
