Nuclear Weapons Abolition and Conversion Act of 2025

Summary#

The bill says the United States should sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. It says the United States should ratify the treaty when doing so would lead to the verified elimination of all nuclear weapons under strict international control. If the President certifies that every country with nuclear weapons has begun verified and irreversible elimination under the treaty, the bill directs funding for nuclear weapons programs to be used for climate work, human and infrastructure needs, and efforts to encourage other countries to take part. It also calls for converting nuclear weapons industry facilities and programs and retraining their employees.

What it means for you#

The bill does not describe direct benefits or requirements for individuals. Its funding and industry-conversion provisions would begin only after the President makes the required certification.

Expenses#

The bill gives no dollar amount. It directs funding already appropriated for nuclear weapons programs to the listed purposes.
