Service Weapon Purchase Act

Full Title:
Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act of 2025

Summary#

This bill would let Federal law enforcement officers buy firearms that their agency has declared surplus. The Administrator of General Services must set up a program to do this within 1 year of the law taking effect. An officer can buy a retired firearm only during the six-month period after the firearm is retired and only if the officer is in good standing with the agency that issued the firearm. The firearm must be sold at its salvage value based on age and condition. The bill uses existing legal definitions for “Federal law enforcement officer” and for “firearm,” and it excludes certain machineguns not lawfully possessed before section 922(o) took effect.

What it means for you#

  • If you are a Federal law enforcement officer (including a retired officer), you may be eligible to buy a surplus agency-issued firearm under this program if you are in good standing and you buy it within six months after it is retired.
  • If you are not a Federal law enforcement officer, the bill does not provide a way to buy these retired firearms.
  • The General Services Administration (GSA) must create the purchase program within one year of enactment.
