Hunger-Free Future Act

Summary#

This bill, titled the Hunger-Free Future Act of 2025, would change section 3(u) of the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008. It would stop the Secretary of Agriculture from issuing a Thrifty Food Plan update or reevaluation if that change would result in an increase in food insecurity. The bill adds a definition of "food insecurity" for this purpose: the number of households that lack adequate food because they do not have enough money or other resources. The bill also says updates must continue to adjust the cost of the diet as already described in the statute.

What it means for you#

If enacted, the law would limit how the Thrifty Food Plan can be updated. The Thrifty Food Plan is used when making Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) calculations. The Secretary could not approve an update or reevaluation that would increase the number of households lacking adequate food, by the bill's definition.
