Nitrate and Arsenic Water Grants

Summary#

The bill would create a grant program for projects that reduce nitrate or arsenic in drinking water. Eligible applicants would include certain water systems, qualified nonprofits, and state or local agencies. Applicants must identify the contamination source and explain how their project would reduce it. The program would prioritize some disadvantaged communities and projects serving children or other vulnerable groups. The Environmental Protection Agency would also review how the program considers equity.

What it means for you#

Water systems, eligible nonprofits, and state or local agencies could apply for grants. Grants could also help pay for treatment technology serving disadvantaged communities, low-income homeowners, and landlords or property owners who provide housing to low-income renters. The bill does not guarantee that any particular applicant or household would receive assistance.

Expenses#

The bill would authorize $15 million for fiscal year 2026 and $15 million for each fiscal year afterward, subject to available appropriations. No more than 4 percent of grant funds could be used for the Administrator’s administrative costs.
