Fix Moldy Housing Act

Summary#

The Fix Moldy Housing Act would direct the Environmental Protection Agency to commission a study on when and how indoor mold should be assessed and removed. Based on the study, the EPA would issue nonbinding national standards and assist state and Tribal governments with mold programs, including grants for licensing programs, technical assistance, and training. The bill would also provide grants to assess and remove mold in public buildings and private homes. Some grant funds could cover up to six months of temporary housing for people severely affected by mold who lack insurance and cannot afford other housing. Grants would prioritize certain low-income communities and areas more susceptible to mold. The bill was introduced on April 8, 2025, and referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

What it means for you#

State and Tribal governments could apply for grants to support mold licensing programs and to assess and remove mold in public buildings and homes. Eligible residents severely affected by mold might receive temporary housing assistance through a state or Tribal grant program, subject to the bill’s conditions. The bill does not specify an individual application process.

Expenses#

The bill authorizes $50 million per year for fiscal years 2026 through 2030 for the state and Tribal assistance program, and another $50 million per year for the mold assessment and remediation grants. The federal share of costs under the latter grants could not exceed 60 percent. These are authorized amounts; the text does not state that the funds have been appropriated.
