This bill would add a requirement to section 487(a) of the Higher Education Act. If an institution issues student identification cards after the law takes effect, each card must list phone contact information for: (1) the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, (2) the Crisis Text Line, and (3) a campus mental health center or program chosen by the institution. If an institution does not issue ID cards after the law takes effect, it must publish the same contact information on its website. If 988 or the Crisis Text Line stops existing, the Secretary may name a different organization with a similar purpose. The requirement begins one year after the date of enactment.
Students at colleges and other institutions that make ID cards will see phone numbers for suicide and crisis help and for their campus mental health center on their ID cards. If a school does not make ID cards, the same information will be posted on the school website. The change starts one year after the law is enacted.
