Lawless Cities Accountability Act

Summary#

The bill would bar federal funds from going to a state or local jurisdiction that the Attorney General determines is a “lawless jurisdiction.” The definition covers jurisdictions that restrict police response to widespread or sustained violence or destruction, withdraw police protection in certain areas, weaken or defund law enforcement agencies, or refuse federal law enforcement help when they cannot restore order. The Attorney General would have to make and publish determinations, with explanations, within 30 days of enactment and at least once every quarter. A designated jurisdiction could receive federal funds again on the later of 180 days after its first designation or the date the Attorney General determines it is no longer lawless.

What it means for you#

A state or local government designated under the bill could lose access to federal funds. The bill does not specify which funding programs would be affected. The Attorney General would publish each determination and its explanation.
