The bill directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services, through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to create and maintain a database of state and local laws intended to reduce gun violence. Governments would enter information about their laws, when they were enacted and took effect, their size, and gun violence and death rates before and after the laws took effect. State and local governments could search the database. The Secretary would promote its use and report to Congress every two years on submissions, common topics, reported successes, and participation by area.
State and local governments would be asked to contribute information about their gun violence prevention laws and use the database. The bill does not specify that the database would be open to the general public.
The bill authorizes $1.5 million for fiscal year 2026 and $1 million for fiscal year 2027 and each year after. These are authorized amounts, not a statement that the money has been spent.
