Native American Seeds Act

Summary#

This bill directs the Secretary of the Interior to work with Indian Tribes and Tribal organizations to identify and protect "Native American seeds." Within 1 year after the law takes effect, the Secretary must determine which seeds are Native American seeds and support: (A) tribal efforts to protect those seeds; (B) Native American seed banks and related facilities; and (C) traditional tribal agriculture systems that nurture and harvest the seeds. The bill also requires the Secretary not to disclose information provided by a tribe if the tribe identifies it as culturally sensitive, proprietary, or confidential. A court must defer to the Secretary's reasonable interpretation of any unclear parts of the Act. The bill states that no additional funds are authorized and that activities are subject to appropriations made in advance.
