The bill would require the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to review deaths by suicide among veterans who received VA hospital care or medical services and died by suicide during the five years before enactment. The review would examine veterans’ age, gender, and race; medications and diagnoses; combat experience and trauma; and VA facilities with notably high prescription and suicide rates. It would also identify patterns and recommend ways to improve veterans’ safety and well-being. The Secretary would have 18 months to complete the review and 30 days afterward to send the report to Congress and make it public.
The bill calls for a public review of certain veteran suicide deaths and related health care information. It does not describe changes to individual veterans’ care or services.
The bill does not specify expenses.
