No Rewards for January 6 Rioters

Summary#

This bill would bar the use of federal funds to pay or compensate any person who was prosecuted for involvement in the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol. It specifically blocks payments from the Judgment Fund and any victim compensation fund and forbids creating a compensation fund for those people. The bill also prevents refunds of court-ordered payments (restitution, fines, or special assessments) paid by people convicted for that attack, including people later pardoned. Any amounts that would otherwise be refunded must be transferred to the Architect of the Capitol.

What it means for you#

  • If you were prosecuted for involvement in the January 6 attack, this bill would prevent you from receiving federal compensation or refunds of restitution, fines, or special assessments, even if you were later pardoned.
  • No new federal compensation fund could be set up to pay people prosecuted for that attack.
  • Money that might otherwise be refunded would be sent to the Architect of the Capitol.

Expenses#

No publicly available information about estimated federal budgetary costs or savings. The bill does require the Secretary of the Treasury to transfer any amounts that would have been refunded to the Architect of the Capitol.
