Ultrasounds Save Lives Act

Summary#

The bill would require abortion providers to perform an ultrasound and share its results before an abortion, except in specified medical emergencies. At least 24 hours before the procedure, the provider would also have to give the patient an in-person consent form describing the pregnancy’s gestational age, medical risks, and developmental characteristics. The patient, provider, and a witness would sign the form, which the provider would keep in the medical record. The bill would allow exceptions when following these rules would pose a greater risk of death or serious, irreversible physical harm to the pregnant woman.

The bill would allow the Attorney General to seek civil penalties against providers who knowingly violate the requirements. It would also let the woman, or a parent of a minor, bring a civil action for damages. The woman would not be subject to penalties under the bill. The bill was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
