Restoring Law and Order Act

Summary#

The bill would create a federal grant program for state, local, and tribal agencies that enforce criminal laws. Grants could support hiring and retaining officers, addressing vehicle theft and violent crime, acquiring resources to target drug and fentanyl crimes, processing criminal evidence, and other listed law enforcement activities. The program would also fund efforts to detain and deport immigrants who committed crimes in the United States and to combat interstate child trafficking. Grant recipients would have to keep records for audits.

What it means for you#

Eligible agencies could apply for grants from the Attorney General. The bill does not specify how individual communities or residents would be affected.

Expenses#

The bill would provide $500 million for the grant program for fiscal year 2026, with the money available through September 30, 2030. The funding would come from unobligated balances that the bill rescinds; any remainder would go to the Treasury. It would also direct certain funds previously used for federal diversity, equity, inclusion, or accessibility initiatives to the grant program.
