Pursuing Equity in Mental Health Act

Summary#

The Pursuing Equity in Mental Health Act would support mental health services, research, training, and public education focused on racial and ethnic minority groups, including young people. It would allow special consideration for grant applicants serving a high share of these groups and require a study of research gaps in mental health disparities. It would also support training for health professionals and create an outreach strategy to promote mental health and reduce stigma related to mental illness and substance use.

What it means for you#

The bill would support research, training, and outreach, but it does not guarantee that any person will receive services. The outreach strategy would be designed to meet different cultural and language needs and be suitable for different ages. The Secretary would report to Congress each year on the strategy’s outcomes.

Expenses#

The bill authorizes $60 million for primary and behavioral health care grants in fiscal year 2025, then $80 million per year for fiscal years 2026 through 2031. It also authorizes $20 million per year for the outreach strategy and $150 million per year for the National Institutes of Health for fiscal years 2026 through 2031. It authorizes an additional $750 million per year for the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities for those same years.
