Mitigating Extreme Lawlessness and Threats Act

Summary#

This bill amends 18 U.S.C. 2101 to increase criminal penalties for rioting. It inserts a new penalty subsection. Under the new text, a violation of the rioting provision can be punished by a fine, up to 10 years in prison, or both. If the defendant committed or aided an act of violence while rioting, the penalty is a fine, between 1 and 10 years in prison, or both. If the defendant assaulted a federal law enforcement officer or a member of the uniformed service during the rioting activity, the penalty is a fine, at least 1 year in prison and up to life, or both. The bill also redesignates several subsections and updates a cross-reference in the statute.
